Field of View and Focal Length in Film Production

Field of View (FoV) defines the angular cone and physical dimensions visible through the camera lens onto the imaging sensor plane. In location scouting and set planning, knowing the exact physical dimensions of a frame at a designated distance ensures that actors, vehicles, architecture, and lighting gear fit into the camera's shot without requiring unneeded lens swaps.

Angle of View (AOV) Calculation Formula

Angle of View (Horizontal):
   θ_H = 2 · arctan( W_sensor / (2 · f) )

Physical Framing Width at Distance (d):
   Width = 2 · d · tan( θ_H / 2 ) = d · (W_sensor / f)

Where W_sensor is the sensor active width in mm, f is focal length in mm, and d is distance to subject in meters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is the difference between Field of View (FOV) and Angle of View (AOV)?

Angle of View is measured strictly in degrees (e.g. 54.4°), describing the angular spread of light reaching the sensor. Field of View refers to the physical spatial dimensions (e.g. 5.14m wide by 3.43m high) captured at a specific distance from the lens.

Q2. How does sensor crop factor alter Field of View?

Because smaller sensors crop into the central portion of the lens image circle, a 50mm lens on Super 35 captures a narrower angle of view (approx. 33°) than the same 50mm lens on Full Frame (approx. 46°), requiring a wider focal length (e.g. 35mm) to match the Full Frame perspective.
